The Venetian harbor and all the fishing-boats that deliver fresh fish to all the restaurants in the harbor.
A perfect spot to enjoy the sunset before dining at one of the cozy taverns situated in the west part of the city.

Fortezza Frourio. Built between 1573 and 1587 after the Turks attack in 1571. In 1646 the Turkish troops once again arrived under the command of Hussein Pasha. After just 30 days the Governor of Rethymno negotiated the capitulation of the city. You will find the Sultan Ibrahim Mosque in the middle of the fortezza.
Iroon Sq or the square of the unknown soldier. Here you will find a taxi-station and The Small Train that will take you along for a trip through the old town.
One of the long shopping-streets also starts from here and ends down at the Venetian harbor.
The Venetian Loggia was used as a meeting place for the upper-class society during the Venetian era. Now it hosts the Museum shop for the archeological museum. The street K. Paleologou runs from Arkadiou up to the Rimondi-fountain.
Bishop Irenaeos was the founder of Anek Lines (1968) after a disaster with badly maintained ferries (owned by a monopoly at the mainland) that caused the death of 240 people. Anek was founded as a stock holding company and only those who were born or lived at Crete could buy shares. The first ship was a Finnish tanker, rebuilt to a passenger-vessel. Many more ships were built and the monopoly between Crete and the mainland was forever broken.
You will find the Tourist-information and the Tourist-police down at the beach road. The information is open between 11 A.M 2 P.M from April.
The Old Port "Megali Porta" (above) and just inside the port you find the market (since 1936). Here you buy fresh fish, fruit and vegetables from early in the morning until late at night all week long except on Sundays.
Every Thursday there is a big market down at the beach (starts at Iroon Square).
It is well worth a visit! Mondays you will find the market behind the big
Super Market Champion and Saturdays the market is close to the busstation.
Mosque Tis Nerantzes in nighttime with it´s three domes and a large minaret is situated just in the middle of the old town. Today it is used as a music school named Odeion.
The shopping-street Kallergi. Here at the corner you will find a jeweller-shop owned by a Swedish girl. They speak Swedish, Danish and Norwegian.
The Faro Beach Hotel, just beside the Venetian Harbor.
Vernardou. Museum of history and folklore is a private collection of furniture, ceramics and more situated in a Venetian building from the 15-th century.
Anek Line office. If you are unsure about the weather situation, ask here if the boat will leave. During the season the boat leaves every evening at 8.00 P.M and arrives in Piraeus 5.30 A.M.
Arkadiou-street goes parallel to the beach road, from Iron Square down to the harbor. Here you can buy almost everything.
Kallergi-street (above and to the left). One of the many shopping-streets in the old town.
You can buy fresh bread (the small round pieces of bread, typical for Greece) and donuts almost everywhere in the streets.
At Platia Petrichaki you will find the (A)Rimondi-fountain from the Venetian era. Built in the year 1626 by Alvis Arimondi. A natural meeting place for both tourists and the locals.
Café Galero is Rethymnos oldest Internet-café.
The Police-station, close to Fortezza. The Tourist Police is down at the beach road just beside the Tourist-office.
The Cathedral
Platia Tesseron Martiron (The square of the four martyrs) with its statue of Kostis Giamboudakis.Here is a taxi-station an the new-built church as well as many cafes.
The City park is well worth a visit. Among the other animals, you will find kri-kri(Cretan wild-goats).
Here is also a small café just beside the fountain.
The bus-station is situated in the west part of the town. Green buses are for Chania, Iraklio and other cities, local buses are blue. To the left Fortezza, photo taken from the bus-station.

Arabatzoglou, one of the cozy shopping-streets where you can buy handmade Cretan souvenirs. A bit further down the street you will find a Irish pub if you are tired of Souvlaki and Retsina!

Inside this amazing old port you will find a bakery where they still make baklavain the traditional way in the oven.

Agias Varvaras ends at Ethn. Antistasseos, one of the bigger shopping-streets. Try the small alleys where you will find small ouzo-bars and local taverns.
